Copia, a Public Benefit Corporation (PBC), is the leading technology platform for managing food surplus redistribution, empowering food service & retail companies like grocers, caterers, and restaurants to effectively manage their waste and easily distribute their surplus food. National brands across the US work with Copia to reduce food insecurity in the communities where they operate and serve, help reduce their greenhouse gas emissions by diverting food from landfills, and boost their profitability through enhanced tax deductions.
BUSINESSES should use Copia if they have surplus and want to feed their neighbors, help the planet, benefit their bottom line, and show compliance with state laws like California’s SB-1383. Copia can work with any businesses that have surplus donations – big or small – like hotels, restaurants, hospitals, universities, stadiums, events, catering companies, nonprofit organizations (eg., schools), municipalities, and more.
NONPROFITS serving those in need should use Copia if they want to receive surplus donations from local businesses directly to their doorsteps!
If you’re already working successfully with a food recovery service, please keep at it! But if you’re having trouble getting started or scaling your donation efforts, Copia is a great option. Using Copia is the easiest way to donate your surplus, capture enhanced tax deductions, and have a 360 view of your business’s impact. With a 99% match rate, our software will locate a good nonprofit home for your surplus anywhere in the country (and beyond). Copia’s live support team will ensure everything goes off without a hitch.
Copia is headquartered in California and operates in all 50 U.S. States, Canada, and Puerto Rico.
We accept all wholesome food and apparently fit edible grocery products. This includes both raw ingredients and prepared foods. Our technology tracks the types of food donated, ensuring your surplus is dispatched to the best-matched non-profit in Copia’s network. We also accept non-food donations like diapers, shampoo, paper towels, and much more.
Copia charges donating businesses a small percentage of the value of the items in each donation. Users also have the option to subscribe to a monthly plan that provides access to valuable data and resources. Interested in inquiring about Copia plans? Contact us Here.
For our nonprofit community, Copia is completely free. All participating nonprofits must be a verified 501c3 organization serving those in need.
Copia’s donating customers get access to a host of added features. See our Solutions page for more.
With the Good Samaritan Food Donation Act of 1996 and the Food Donation Improvement Act of 2022, the U.S. Federal Government passed major legislation to protect donors from criminal liability. Coupled with Copia’s systems that ensure proper handling and delivery, it’s never been safer to donate.
Further, Copia only works with certified commercial food businesses. We source donations of high-quality excess food – not leftovers from people’s plates.
Any 501c3 nonprofit organization helping people in need is able to sign up and receive food from donating businesses in their area!
That PATH Act, passed in late 2015, ensures that all businesses can receive Enhanced Tax Deductions for donations that meet certain criteria. This means that donating business can deduct the lesser of (a) TWICE the basis value of their donated food or (b) the basis value of the donated food plus one-half of the food’s expected profit margin (assuming the food were sold at its fair market value). Put another way, these tax benefits make donating your surplus a huge boon to your bottom line. Connect with us if you’d like more information on how this works.
